Достаточно редкая и интересная ситуация в бизнесе. С одной стороны пример стратегической ошибки в бизнесе, возможно, из-за недооценки ключевого конкурента (Sony с конкурирующим форматом видео высокой четкости Blue-Ray):

TOKYO–Toshiba Corporation today announced that it has undertaken a thorough review of its overall strategy for HD DVD and has decided it will no longer develop, manufacture and market HD DVD players and recorders. This decision has been made following recent major changes in the market. Toshiba will continue, however, to provide full product support and after-sales service for all owners of Toshiba HD DVD products.

С другой стороны рынок отнесся к этой новости достаточно позитивно и акции в Токио в конце прошлой недели даже немного выросли на волне слухов (странные люди эти инвесторы J, но посмотрим, что будет дальше):

Война проиграна из-за отсутствия перспектив с распространением контента на HD DVD

Sony вероятно могла использовать свое влияние в Голливуде, но если и так, то сделала она это похоже в рамках обычной борьбы и антимонопольным органам будет трудно найти повод для предъявления претензий: студии и крупные ритейлеры принимали решение об отказе от HD DVD совершенно самостоятельно. Не исключено, что второй наиболее пострадавшей стороной будет Microsoft. Она была активной участницей альянса HD DVD. Игровые приставки Xbox не поддерживают Blue-Ray, соответственно Xbox HD DVD Player станет не очень востребованной опцией. Хотя есть и другие точки зрения:

That is the dirty secret no one is talking about. That is why Microsoft is handing out 100 million dollar checks to studios just [to] embrace the HD DVD and not the leading, superior Blu-ray. They want confusion in the market until they perfect the digital download."

Т.е. якобы у Microsoft были совсем другие цели. Сама корпорация пока хранила спокойствие:

"We do not believe the recent reports about HD DVD will have any material impact on the Xbox 360 platform or our position in the marketplace," the company said. "We will wait until we hear from Toshiba before announcing any specific plans around the Xbox 360 HD DVD player."

Я видел разные точки зрения по поводу превосходства одного формата над другим. Есть также мнение, что дело вообще не в форматах, а в DRM. Причем и там не обошлось без виртуализации:

Both Blu-ray and HD DVD players are required to implement AACS. Blu-ray, however, also requires the implementation of BD+. BD+ is a proprietary standard used in the digital rights management of some titles on Blu-ray discs. BD+ is not an encryption, but rather supplements the other security measures already used. BD+ is described as a virtual machine, able to execute programs and applications. BD+ also allows patching and executing player specific code behind the users back.

Is BD+ a good thing or a bad thing? Well, it is both. Manufacturers will be able to provide patches or software updates on Blu-ray discs, and the users will not have to do anything out of the ordinary to update their players. The downside to this is that it could be used to limit the functionality of the players.  The AACS managed copies requirement is still in effect for Blu-ray, but would you be surprised if content providers found a way around allowing consumers to legitimately backup their content, especially given Sony’s history (cough* rootkit)? BD+ could be their way out.

ИМХО все это будет иметь единственное последствие: в отсутствие конкуренции у Sony не будет достаточного стимула по развитию Blue-ray, что в итоге приведет к замедлению прогресса в области HD Video. Это грустно 🙁 А вы что думаете?
